2010 ACU British Youth QX Championships

As you are aware from the Calendar the 2010 British Youth Quad X Championship (currently) has been reduced to just 2 rounds over one weekend. Apparently this is due to a total lack of support for all the youth classes in 2009, with just 24 riders signing up for the series.

A British Championship can't be decided over 4 moto's in one weekend, it would be a farce, however the clubs can't be expected to run events at a loss, THEY NEED YOUR SUPPPORT!

There is a meeting of the newly formed quad only committee on the 13th January. Have your say, email your club or the ACU. Use it or lose it.

C'mon guys, help save the British Youth Championships and voice your opinion and make a commitment to support it NOW!

18.10.09. Nora MX Re-scheduled Rnd 5 Blechingdon – The Final

The Nora MX team had put in a lot of hard work on the track since our last visit. The start line had been repositioned and where it used to be was now part of the main track with a series of corners and a jump added..... A definite improvement guys!

For the first time this season Nora let the modified 100’s line up behind the gate rather than a flag start....... That’s more like it, no more over anxious riders jumping the start. Adam gets 3 out of 3 clean holeshots leaving the modified auto’s for dead!

With no other shifters entered on the day, Adam concentrated on improving his lap times and honing his overtaking skills, passing the back markers. By the end of the first race he had lapped most of the field and scored a faster lap time than all the 250 standards and half the 250 mods! Moto's 2 & 3 went pretty much the same with his fastest lap times within a split second of each other.

Thanks to Adam's great sponsors for their continued support.

17.10.09 ATV World YFM 250R Test Day, Bletchingdon

With the final round of Nora MX on the Sunday and a test day with ATV World on the Saturday, what better way to spend the weekend?
Adam had first tested the, then all new modified YFM 250R in March last year and raced a standard version to a creditable 4th place in JH Quad Racing. So, what of the latest incarnation? Well it certainly looked the part, with blue frame, white plastics and day-glow orange wheels and accessories.

Martin Fletcher from ATV World talked us through the impressive list of modifications, with a full race Duncan Racing engine, Laegers, Elka's, no expense had been spared and Adam was itching to give it a go!

Adam rolled out onto the track, taking it easy for the first couple of laps to get used to the machine and the revised track layout. Gaining confidence all the time, he got quicker and quicker, the only problem for Adam was, as he hadn’t ridden a 4 stroke all season, he was over revving it and not making full use of the massive amount of torque this engine delivers. Despite it having been set up for a heavier rider Adam coped well with the hard suspension and would have quite happily stayed out there all day.

Overall impression – Awesome! What a fantastic piece of kit! Class winner? Definitely.

Dilemma!! Do we stay in the shifter class for another season or do we move up to the 250 mods?.......... Thanks Fletch!!

04.10.09 Nora MX Wroxton

Probably the best track in the Nora series, very fast, well graded and now with an improved spectators area.
After fierce battles with the modified auto’s for the hole shot, the shifters dominated the days racing. Adam ran 3 good moto’s, but couldn’t match the straight-line speed of the highly tuned KTM. Frazer McFadden had a big off in the last race, but climbed back on to finish the race.

Final Result 1st Frazer 2nd Adam 3rd Brad

27.09.09 NETT Final Round Wooley Grange

Adam’s hopes of a final podium finish are dashed within sight of the chequered flag.

Murray Graham had a 22 point lead over Adam going into the final round, so it would take a DNF to stop him from taking the Championship, but it’s never over until the end!

Moto 1. Adam holeshots followed by Brad and Murray. Jack Straughan (with his broken wrist well on the mend), powers around the outside and tucks in behind Adam as they enter the second corner. Into the second lap and the two Maessen RM85’s are already stretching out a considerable lead over the rest of the field, Adam was still in the lead and Murray had dropped to the back with a brake problem, could this be the break (brake) Adam needed to keep his hopes alive? Part way into lap 2 under pressure from Jack, Adam enters a corner too fast, he rides high on the berm trying to contain it, but disappears over the top and down the other side. Desperately trying to get the bike back on the track he finally receives help, but too late as the whole field has just gone past him. He battles back through the field, but there's not enough time to catch Murray in 4th place, so Jack takes the chequered flag, followed by Brad and Zoe Neill, Murray 4th and Adam 5th.

Moto 2. Another holeshot by Adam, this time Jack is right behind and manages to out brake Adam into the 3rd corner. Adam uses his head and lets Jack go, settling for second place.

Moto 3. It’s Brad’s turn to take the holeshot, Adam on the outside of him, but Brad runs wide, and with nowhere to go, Adam is off the track, this time he’s able to keep it going and maintains 4th place. Lap 2 and Adam is back in control at the front and with Jack opting out of the last race Adam looks set for  a win and podium as he keeps a safe distance from Murray in second place, then, two corners and a table-top to go the engine locks solid with a big-end bearing failure, leaving Adam stranded at the side of the track........ That’s racing!!!

Final results 1st Murray 2nd Brad 3rd Zoe, Adam 5th.

Final Championship standings 1st Murray Graham 2nd Adam 3rd Brad Swinbank.

Congratulations to Murray Graham on his NETT Championship win.

Thanks to Adam's sponsors for their continued support.

19.09.09 ACU British Youth Championship Final, Culham, Oxfordshire

The Curse of Culham returns.

We arrived late afternoon Friday to get a decent spot in the paddock and with the sun shining we lit the obligatory barbeque.

The stage was set for the British Youth finals on the Saturday, followed by the adults MMX including solo’s on the Sunday. The paddock was filling up with competitors and traders, there were flags and banners giving the event a real atmosphere.
Jack Straughan had the Championship sewn up and only needed to finish to retain the title for a second year, but with Adam just 4 points behind Frazer McFadden, he needed to finish ahead of him in the 2 moto’s to regain his second place and with his present form this was within reach.

Holding area before practice

Out onto the track for 5 minutes practice followed by 10 minutes of timed laps to qualify for gate positions, things were looking good. The two Maessen RM85’s of Jack and Adam were first out followed by the rest of the field. 3 laps into the qualifier Adam pulls into the pit area complaining of loss of power and his quad grinds to a halt. Unable to restart it’s back to the paddock to investigate the problem. Fortunately Adam put in a reasonable time on lap 2 which was quick enough to give him third place behind Jack and Frazer.

Jack’s dad came over to give assistance and offered the use of the engine from Jack’s RM85 crosser, however with a replacement plug the engine was revving nicely and it seemed as though everything was okay!

Moto 1. Down to the gate the riders took their positions............ 15 second board, 5 second board, the gate drops and Adam launches out first. 10 metres up the steep start straight Adam stops and 33 riders fly past him. He desperately tries to kick it over, but it’s all in vain, it’s not going anywhere without a tow rope.

Line up - moto 1

Jack takes the lead but Frazer is right behind him. Murray Graham has 3 very quick auto’s between him and the leaders and can’t get past. With Jack having recently broken his arm just above the wrist he was obviously suffering a great deal and by lap 6 Frazer makes his move to take the lead and the chequered flag. Knowing that he stood a chance of winning this race, Adam is devastated and disappears into the back of the trailer to hide his emotions.

There are lots of really generous people in our little quadding community, none more so than the Graham’s, so with Bobby offering the use of Murray’s spare bike it was out for moto 2. Frazer took the lead followed by Jack with his wrist heavily strapped. Adam, having made a relatively poor start quickly moves up behind Murray, but can’t do enough to catch him as the curse has hit again, this time the gear shifter is hitting the frame making gear changing almost impossible.

The Culham Curse list so far – Broken A-arm (last year’s British), popped piston (day before this year’s British Rnd 2), big end bearings (same day on race bike borrowed from Murray), popped piston (today’s British finals), gear shifter stuck (on same day)............. That’s racing!!!

Results for the day – Frazer 1st, Jack 2nd, Murray 3rd

Overall Results for the 2009 British Youth Championship (100cc geared) 1st Jack, 2nd Frazer, 3rd Adam. Well done to all the riders.

Congratulations to Jack Straughan 2009 British Champion

06.09.09. Nora MX Rnd 9 Enstone

Adam continues his winning streak down South.

With the Shifter class poorly supported in the South it was a pleasure to see Frazer McFadden arrive at the meeting and with the QRS meeting at Duns cancelled we had hoped that Murray Graham would have made the trip down, so we could have a repeat of the previous weekend’s intense racing, unfortunately Murray didn’t make the long journey!

Moto 1. The shifters and mods lined up in front of the gates, standards behind, it was to be another flag start. Not sure why the modified classes always get the short straw, anyway, Frazer holeshots, but Adam stays ultra close to his rear axle and keeps pushing him, waiting for a mistake. It was well into lap 2 when Adam finally made his move on Frazer, eventually opening up a 25 second lead at the chequered flag.

Moto 2. Adam’s turn for a holeshot this time. With Frazer and a hungry pack of auto’s on his tail, Adam wastes no time in opening up a lead, but keeps a watchful eye on Frazer, who is never too far away.

Moto 3.  It’s a turn for one of the super quick auto’s to take the holeshot, with Adam along side. By the second corner Adam has the lead and Frazer is cutting through. It’s another race dominated by the shifters.

As his confidence continues to grow riding the Maessen RM85, Adam scores maximum points on the day with fastest laps in all 3 races and more importantly improves his previous lap times for this track , putting in faster times than the 250 standards and quick enough to position him in the top 5 of the mods.

29.08.09 NETT Rnds 8&9 Blue Barns

Adam makes it 3 wins in a row after some of the closest and most exciting racing of the season. Read Adam's race report in his own words below.

Day 1
Moto 1 - I was beaten into 3rd for the holeshot and for some reason l wasn’t focussed, allowing Murray and Frazer to get away from me at the front. Four laps in a mechanical fault struck the KTM of Fraser, as soon as that happened the dust got wiped off my brain and I was now starting to catch Murray, but it was too late and Murray took the chequered flag followed by me, Brad and Zoe Neill in her first NETT outing on the Maessen RM85.
Moto 2 - I was off to a flying start and got the holeshot. 3 laps in Fraser overtook, but didn’t get away from me and he was having to fight hard to hold the lead. Out of the bomb hole and into the corner, so tight together we came into contact with each other. It was nail biting, blood rushing non-stop action with the 1st place position always being threatened but well protected and Fraser just wasn’t letting it go, that is until the back straight, over the two ski jumps were I regained my lead. I was excited to re-take the lead, but came in too fast into the last corner and struggled to hold my line and just got pipped at the post. So this time Fraser was first to cross the finish line with me less than half a second behind and Murray only a corner away from us.
Moto 3 - I got another good start and secured my second holeshot of the day with Fraser and Murray just behind me. The racing was close, but everyone managed to hold their position from start to finish.
So overall results 1st Me 2nd Murray 3rd Fraser.

NETT Party Night - There was a big marquee with a bucking bronco, a bouncy castle for the kids, a DJ and an auction to raise money for the air ambulance and Robert Elliot. It was all a well put together night. The bucking bronco was so much harder than it looked and I only lasted 8 seconds on it before being kicked off the side. I tried again and lasted 21 and for one last attempt I lasted 48 seconds.

Day 2
Moto 1 - I had a good start and got the holeshot, but 3 laps in, Fraser had got past me, I was chasing him hard and managed to get alongside him on one of the top corners, going wide on the exit and nearly hitting the fencing. I then got back right behind him again but still couldn’t get past. Fighting our way through the backmarkers I nearly had him a few times, but he kept pushing and stayed in front. So I crossed the line a split second behind Fraser with Murray in third.
Moto 2 - I had a poor start because of hitting the bungee start cord and was the 5th into the first corner with Zoe Neill getting a brilliant holeshot ahead of us boy’s. I didn’t want to waste any time getting past Brad and Fraser, as Murray was now in front of Zoe and was pulling out a big lead on the rest of the field. A few corners later I had taken Zoe and was starting to catch Murray fast. With only 2 laps to go I had caught up to him and got past just before the last lap flag came out, taking the chequered flag first followed by Murray and then Fraser.
Moto 3 -My 4th holeshot of the weekend with Fraser in hot pursuit again I had to defend my position throughout the race, with Frazer pushing into the lead several times into corner 1, but I managed to cut back in every time to regain my position. Another close and exciting race win for me.

Final standings Me 1st  Fraser 2nd Murray 3rd

27.08.09 Nora MX Press Release

09.08.09. NETT Rnd 7 Wooley Grange

Adam NETT’s victory despite taking a big fall in the second race.

.............................Adam...............................................................Murray....................................................................Brad.................................

Moto 1 and Adam takes the hole shot followed by Murray and Brad. The track is dusty so Adam makes the most of the clear air in front of him to pull out a lead before he starts to catch the back markers.
With consistent lap times he takes the chequered flag with a 22 second ahead of Murray.
Moto 2 another hole shot and everything is set for a second win until disaster strikes! Adam goes through time control for his final lap with a good lead but gets a nasty kick off the first table-top, landing side-ways he manages to hold it only to be spun in the opposite direction throwing him off with his quad bouncing over him. There are calls from the spectators for the paramedics, Adam is having none of that and is back up and away, but not before Murray gets past him.
Adam returns to the paddock and we assess the damage.... Nothing serious fortunately, just the bars bent back and the controls twisted around, a few scuffs on his Pulse handguards and his helmet and a hole in his jersey. Oh and Adam had abrasions to his shoulder and back and bruising to his leg, which he was keen to show off to everyone.
Moto 3 with a win and second place each for Adam and Murray it was down to the last race for the decider. Brad anticipates the start well and gets the hole shot, with Murray and Adam in hot pursuit. Taking Murray halfway round the first lap, Adam now has his sights set on Brad, but has to wait another lap before making his move. Putting into practice what Stef Murphy had shown him earlier in the week, Adam boldly took the outside line through the deep cut corner in front of the spectator area and smoothly powered his way around Brad to take the lead and.... At last his first NETT win of the season.

............................................................................Keep the power on and go round the outside!..........................................................................

Final standings 1st Adam, 2nd Murray, 3rd Brad.

Overall Championship standings – Due to an unfortunate accident on a push-bike Jack Straughan has broken his wrist and was unable to defend his lead, so Murray moves up to 1st place with Adam 2nd, Jack drops to 3rd. Get well soon Jack and stick to 4 wheels in future!

05.08.09 Stef Murphy Training Day, Bletchingdon

What to do in the school hols? Well, dad had booked a day’s training with Stef Murphy on the pretence that it was for Adam, but we know it was really to help him beat some of the other old men in the over 35’s!
Leaving sunny Cheshire behind us, we headed South into darkened skies over Oxfordshire and the wet Nora MX track at Bletchingdon where we were met by Stef.
Adam was eager to get out on the track to try out the rear shock that we had just had re-built by Russ at Mick Gardner Racing and made it first to the track.
After a few warm-up laps it was down to some technical training, firstly looking for different lines through corners, not just the best lines, but the lines you may need to take when passing other riders.

Stef took dad and Adam to various places around the track for different challenges, including drop-off’s, table-tops, bomb holes etc, practicing them over and over again, stopping occasionally to correct and advise, finishing off with start line practice.
With only a short break for lunch, the intensive day was over in a flash and we were packing up to go home.
Thanks Stef for an excellent day’s training, keep up the good work.

See PHOTO'S for more action shots. Stefan Murphy ACU qualified club coach.

26.07.09 Nora MX Rnd 8 Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire

With Adam's granddad under heavy sedation in his padded cell at the nursing home, Adam and dad (Jason) made an early start Sunday morning for the trip down to Bletchingdon.

The Maessen RM has just had a makeover with new Suzuki plastics and graphics, Pulse Racing hand guards and full use was made of all Motul’s cleaning, lubricating, waxing and polishing products...... Perfect!......... Well almost, we just need to finish it off with a new seat cover via ZIP.

Moto 1 - With the 100 standards all nicely lined up behind the start gate, it was yet again a flag start for the mods from in front of the gates. Inevitably, as soon as the flag moves either up or down, someone will shoot of the line followed in a mad scramble by the others. How many times do they get recalled.......... Never! Not to worry, Adam got third for the hole shot and quickly took the lead, taking the chequered flag 18 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Moto 2 - Another flag start, this time anticipated well with a clean hole shot. With Adam's lap times consistantly improving with every outing on his RM, he manages to complete the 8 laps over 11 seconds quicker than the first race.

Moto X? - For Adam's third moto, Nora allowed him to race with the 250 mods & highbrids. Not wanting to interfere with anyone's championship standings, Adam made a cautious start, following the pack into the first corner in 12th place. With the track rutting up, he still manages to put in his fastest lap of the day, some 8 seconds quicker than in practice, however with just a couple of laps to go the back axle locknuts work loose, causing the brake pads to fall out and Adam has to coast back to the paddock. His overall time for the 8 laps completed is still 15 seconds quicker than his first moto.

Adam believes there is plenty more to come when we get the sloppy rear suspension sorted, so it's off to Mick Gardner Racing on Monday, where Russ will re-valve and replace the spring with a heavier one.

Thanks to Josh Coomb's dad (Chris) for the pics.... See you at the next round.

19.07.09 ACU British Championship Rnd 3 Dean Moor, Cumbria

Wot, no granddad?

6 weekends quad racing on-the-run had taken its toll on Adam's very old granddad. Trying to get the trailer ready, preparing the bike, travelling up and down the country, collecting his pension and after a couple of weeks of everything going pear shaped, enough was enough!

With granddad securely tied to his zimmer frame for the day, dad (Jason) made the trip up to the Lake District early Sunday morning for the third round of the British Youth Championship.

After the initial test ride at Enstone two weeks ago and the aborted trip to Duns, this would be Adam’s first proper race on the Maessen RM85, probably not the best time to be trying out a new machine, at a British Championship, but Adam manages a great qualifier finishing in second place.

Moto 1 – The gate drops and Adam storms off the line, getting the hole shot and leads the race through the first few corners, until Jack gets into his stride and takes to the front. After a weeklong sickness prior to Duns, Adam is not quite back on form and despite having a respectable lead over 3rd place, he starts to tire halfway through allowing Frazer slowly reel him in. With just two and a half laps to go Adam slips back a place.

Moto 2 – Jack gets the hole shot, with Adam in fourth, quickly moving up to third where he stayed throughout the race behind Frazer and Jack. (A bit like F1!)

All things considered, a good days racing with scope for improvement on the new machine.

Final standings 1st Jack Straughan 2nd Frazer McFadden 3rd Adam.

See MYLAPS for all the results, or visit the ACU British MMX Championship website.

12.07.09 NOTT Rnd 6 Duns

We made the 5 hour trip up to Scotland Saturday afternoon, truck and trailer with relatives following behind that had come to support.

Sunday we are told by other riders that the meeting has been cancelled and all officials have either gone home or not even turned up. Thanks NETT!

The track, although wet from heavy rain in the night would have been perfect once the 450's had pushed aside the sloppy stuff and would have remained perfect throughout the day, with mostly sunshine and a drying wind. We know, as we didn't leave the track until 3:30!

05.07.09 Nora MX Rnd 7 Enstone

A testing day for Adam!

Out for the first time on the RM85 Adam is impressed with the power and settles down to get used to the new machine with overall finishes in the 100’s class of 1st, 4th and a 2nd in the 3 moto’s, and hole shots in the 1st and 3rd moto’s. That will do for starters!

Some work is required on the set-up and handling of the bike before next weekend at Duns, which Adam will use as practice to prepare for the next round of the British and hopefully a good result.

See the PHOTO'S for more action shots and MYLAPS for all the results.

04.07.09 Maessen RM85 - Adam’s New Ride

With Kieran Jones #888 growing at a vast rate of knots and a possible career in football looming, we managed to strike a deal and Adam is now the proud owner of a Maessen RM85.

03.07.09 Adam James Racing, splits with KIK Cobra

Adam would like to take this opportunity to thank Cobra Moto and KIK ATV Racing for their support during the first half of the 2009 Quad MX season and wish them every success for the future.

Special thanks to Keith Knowles and his team for 2½ years of dedication.

Adam, having just won the IOPD British Championship 2007

28.06.09 NETT Rnd 5 Dean Moor, Cumbria

No camera.
No big bore kit.
No chance for Adam.

That just about sums up a disappointing weekend. The track, as always was fantastic at Dean Moor and Adam rode his nuts off, but couldn’t make any impression on the top 3.

Final results: 1st Jack, 2nd Murray, 3rd Frazer, 4th Adam, 5th Brad.

See MYLAPS for all the results.

21.06.09 ACU British Youth Championship Rnd 2, Culham, Oxfordshire

Qualifying in 3rd on the (slightly extended from Saturday) Culham track, Adam commented on the difference in power between the 65 and 90 engines, but was determined to make the best of it!

Moto 1. Out of the gate and up the hill Adam manages a good 4th for the hole shot behind Jack Straughan, Frazer McFadden and Keiren Jones. 3 laps in and Adam is past Keiren and on a charge after Frazer, but can’t close the gap, finishing 7 seconds down on him. Both Murray Graham, now riding his Cobra (sorry again Murray) and Brad Swinbank had terrible starts, but made light work of cutting back through the field.

Result Moto 1: 1st Jack, 2nd Frazer, 3rd Adam.

Moto 2. Jack takes the hole shot again followed by Keiren and Frazer, with Adam back in fifth. By the end of lap 1 Frazer moves into 2nd place on the deeply rutted track, next past Keiren in lap 3 is Adam, desperate to make up lost ground on Frazer, he manages to reel him in, but not enough to pose a threat and disappointingly has to settle for another third place after 6 gruelling laps, just 6 seconds behind.

Podium

Result Moto 2 & Final standing: 1st Jack, 2nd Frazer, 3rd Adam.

Frazer now joins Adam on equal points, 16 points behind Jack, Murray maintains his 4th spot while Brad moves up to 5th.

20.06.09 Nora MX Rnd 6, Culham, Oxfordshire

Although the 09 Cobra engine is an absolute flyer in its own right, as we’ve discovered over the first half of the season, at a mere 65cc it can’t compete with high powered KTM’s and Suzuki’s and it's only Adam's skill and determination that keep him in contention.

With the hopes and promises of a large bore kit failing to materialize in time for Rnd 2 of the British it was time to take some drastic action! This took shape in the form of last year’s 90cc race engine built by KIK and used by Adam in several events in the latter half of 2008.

We collected the engine from KIK mid-week and proceeded to make the modifications to fit the older engine into the 09 chassis. That done, Friday we loaded up the trailer and took the trip down to Culham for Saturday’s Rnd 6, to test and tweak, ready for the British the following day.

The track was being raced in the opposite direction to previous events and overnight rain had nicely soaked through the sandy surface.

Adam, Harry (ZIP) Walker and Brad chew the fat before the race.

Leading the Championship Adam had first pick of gate and equipped with his new ITP Quadcross rear tyres, made good use of it getting second for the hole shot behind Keiren Jones on the Suzuki. Adam wasted little time, getting past Keiren before the end of the first lap, and then proceeded to carve up a 32 second lead by the end of the race. A noteworthy statistic - Adam was only 3.5 seconds slower than the flying Josh Coombs in the 250 std class!

Paul Holmes Jnr & Snr spectate Drop off

Kicking the engine over ready to go down to the start line for moto 2, it was clear that something wasn’t right. Keith Knowles rushed over to assist, but to no avail, this wasn’t going to be a quick fix!

Back in the paddock Keith stripped the top-end and discovered some foreign matter had got in and damaged the piston, resulting in loss of compression. Unfortunately even after putting a new piston in, we encountered further problems, with a coolant leak into the cylinder, which would necessitate a major strip-down.

In the meantime Bobby Graham and son Murray had arrived in the paddock for Sunday’s British round and very generously offered Adam a ride on Murray’s KTM.

Moto 3 and Adam appears at the top of the steep uphill start and around the corner to take the hole shot by a clear margin. Across the line for the start of lap 2, something gives and Adam grinds to a halt.

Adam takes the hole shot

How much bad luck can you have in one day? Sorry Murray!

With the days racing over, we had the evening to remove the 90 and re-install the 65 engine in Adam’s Cobra, just one of the many joys of racing!

See the PHOTO'S link for more action shots and MYLAPS for all the results.

14.06.09 Quad Racing Scotland Championship Rnd 5 Duns, Scotland.

What is there to do between championship races? Well with little or nowhere to practice, let’s take a 500 mile round trip to Duns and enjoy some Scottish hospitality and do a bit of racing while we're at it!

The forecast wasn’t good for the weekend, but with the sun blazing down as we left home, we were optimistic.

We walked the track Saturday evening, it was immaculately prepared and an earlier rain shower had helped settle the dust. There was a section of gentle whoops that had been added and the main whoops section adjacent to the paddock had been carved to perfection making them deeper and smoother, it was all looking good for Sunday’s racing.

After an interesting practice session (thanks Bobby), the first Moto Adam took third for the hole shot behind the brilliant little Murray Graham and Taylor Gibb. Adam was soon past Taylor and on a mission to catch Murray. Adam managed to close the gap and it was a pleasure to watch the two of them blaze around the track together. Unfortunately for Adam he couldn’t make it past, and Murray took the win.

After a heavy lunchtime shower it was out for Moto 2 on a greasy track and a poor start for Adam, back about fifth. Taylor had taken the hole shot, but Murray didn’t waste any time taking the lead, pulling out a nice gap, while Adam was battling his way through. Adam managed to halt Murray’s gains, but couldn’t make any impact on the gap between them. Another fine display of skills from both riders!

The following two races in the session took place in appalling weather conditions and with no sign of it letting up the meeting was abandoned. We packed up said our goodbye’s and headed off through a veil of mist, with visibility at about 30 metres!

Thanks to QRS and especially the Graham family for their generosity.

NETT or Nora? With the only clash of the season in Adam’s race calendar happening this weekend, the choice was easy, as he can drop two Nora rounds and all rounds of the NETT counting towards the championship, we headed North.

The track was to be run in reverse and looked to be in good condition Saturday evening, however the forecasted rain arrived leaving us with a mud bath!

The reports coming back from all classes, after practice weren’t good and a lot of riders pulled out, however the decision was made to carry on with the meeting, which was a good call as the track continued to dry throughout the day.

Moto 1. Adam ran 6th for the hole shot and could only manage to pull one place back during the race, although it was very close between 3rd and 5th with just 2 second separating AJ Third, Murray Graham and Adam. Brad Swinbank was close behind the trio, Jack Straughan taking the win followed by Frazer McFadden.

Murray Graham with Adam hot on his heels

Moto 2. The track was drying nicely now, although the jumps were providing the riders with some nasty kicks, slowing the pace down. The first three positions remained unchanged throughout the race, going to Jack Frazer & Murray, while Adam and AJ battled for 4th, that was until AJ’s race finished abruptly with a mechanical failure.

Moto 3. Adam made it to 4th for the hole shot, just behind Brad with Frazer following up behind. Jack and Murray maintained their positions throughout the race. Adam made his move on Brad up to 3rd before the end of lap 2, but was soon being pushed by Frazer and was dropped back to 4th.

Brad & Adam 3rd & 4th for the hole shot

Final results: 1st Jack, 2nd Frazer, 3rd Murray, 4th Adam, 5th Brad.

17.05.09 NETT Rnd 3 Blue Barns, Rowley

With plenty of rain leading up to the weekend, and a poor forecast for Sunday, this looked like it would be the end to our run of luck with the weather.

Despite the cold wind we set the coals on the BBQ alight and put on our boots to walk the track. Surprisingly what we saw of the track was in good condition and not the mud bath we expected. We hadn’t got too far when it started to pour down again and we made a hasty retreat back to the trailer to rescue the BBQ.

Sunday morning we were greeted by Stu Walker of Zipwear, who had brought with him, Adam’s race jersey and new personalised seat. Check out the hump! Thanks Stu, really appreciated!

Check out the link and order yours now!

Moto 1. The grassy uphill start long, wet and very slippy. Choice of tyres would make all the difference for the hole shot. Having a choice of non at the moment, we opted for the ones already fitted! Struggling for grip, Adam finally made it to the top and rounded the first bend way back from the leaders. By lap three he had forged his way up to fifth, but appeared slow entering the corners and couldn’t catch AJ Third who was a couple of seconds in front. Back in the paddock and the report was, apart from the lack of grip, the second half of the race was completed without a back brake.

Moto 2. The start straight was drying out and it was time to pull back some points. Making the first corner in forth place, Adam managed to slip past Murray Graham (who was now riding his Cobra) before the end of lap one, all that lay ahead was Frazer and Jack, who by now was way out in front. With Frazer struggling through the back markers, this allowed Adam to close right up, but Frazer managed to hold on to his second spot with Adam three seconds behind. As they pulled off the track Frazer and Adam stopped to congratulate each other on a good race.

Moto 3. Adam was desperate for a good finish to hold on to his championship position. With the hole shot going to Jack Straughan followed by Frazer McFadden, it was down over the drop-off with Adam sat nicely in third with AJ hot on his heels. Into turn two and Adam is thrown onto two wheels allowing AJ through. Lap three and Frazer makes a mistake into one of the corners allowing AJ and Adam through. The two AJ's continuously battle throughout the race and with just two laps to go Adam finally out brakes AJ going into a corner and accelerates through to take second place, keeping it all the way to the flag.

Final positions; 1st Jack Straughan, 2nd Frazer McFadden 3rd Adam

03.05.09 Nora Rnd 4 Arncott, Oxfordshire

Travelling down South 5 o’clock Saturday evening, the scenery was all too familiar to Adam, for only a couple of hours ago he had been travelling in the opposite direction, heading home after a week away in France with the school.

There was still time to walk the track before dusk, so Adam and dad joined up with Keith Knowles and his son Ayrton. Not the best of tracks, but hey it wouldn’t do if they were all perfect, variety is the spice of life, so they say!

Adam & Ayrton getting some late practice in?

Sunday morning, this can’t be right, the sun is shining yet again and just to make the day even brighter, Stu Walker from ZIP brings over a prototype seat for Adam to try out. Apart from looking really cool, Stu had obviously done his homework, as it is a vast improvement on the standard seat, complete with hump to stop Adam's skinny little ass from slipping off the back.

On to the day’s racing and Moto 1. Adam is lightening quick out of the gate, but can’t hold on for the hole shot and is overhauled by a number of auto’s. By lap 2, he and Brad Swinbank are near the back of the field. Traction, or lack of it seemed to be the problem, with Adam taking 3 spins. Undeterred, he battled through the field to finish a close third overall and first in the shifter class.

Adam half a wheel ahead of Reegan out of the gate

Moto 2 and the track had narrowed even more, making it difficult to overtake. First and second for the hole shot, maintained their positions throughout the race, leaving the rest of the pack, including Adam, who didn’t make the best of starts, to scrabble for position.

Adam again managed to forge his way up to third overall, scoring a fastest lap time for the day in the process, but unfortunately one fastest lap isn't enough and he was going to need a few more to score a win.

One of the few jumps at Arncott

Moto 3, could it get any worse? Yes, they bring the bowser out again, especially for the 100 classes. With a nice dowsing on the first corner, there’s a coming together with Adam caught in the middle, the marshals are quick to hand to unravel the bikes, but it’s all too late to save any chance of winning. Despite all, Adam still manages to carve his way back through the field to take fourth overall, second in class.

Final shifter standings: 1st Frazer McFadden, 2nd Adam, 3rd Brad Swinbank.

Not the result he wanted, so that’s it, no more school trips, kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing and late nights enjoying himself, quad racing comes first!

23.04.09 Press Release - Cobra In The News

UK Cobra Quads Dominate Duns, Scotland, Youth ATV National

19.04.09 ACU British Youth Championship Rnd 1 Duns, Scotland.

We awoke Monday morning and looked out. The sun was beating down, all that could be heard was the birds and the sheep Where was every one? Had it all been a dream?

Peace and tranquillity at Duns Monday morning and the fantastic Scottish countryside in the sunshine.

Arriving late afternoon Saturday, we joined up with the KIK team and Cobra Moto to set up camp. The track had just been watered and was looking in good shape and there was also a promise of sunshine for race day.

The evenings leading up to the first round of the British had been a bit frantic, having raced the weekend before there wasn’t much time for preparation. We decided to change over to the +2” JB Racing swing arm, as Adam had used it to good effect last season, however as we found out in practice, it wasn’t working well with the 09 shock.

Snake pit? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Frazer, Adam & Murray

With the sun starting to burn off the early morning cloud, it was time for the first moto. With a softer, shorter 07 shock fitted to the JB swing arm it was time to cross fingers and hope it would improve the handling.

Despite holding back during practice, Adam had still managed second quickest and chose his gate accordingly, and there he sat watching the little 50 Cobra’s scream past, dominating their class. He was both nervous and excited as he was eager to get out there and race.

Steep uphill climb, but Adam still manages to double it at the top! ... BIG air!

The gates drop and they’re off!  With the Cobra ECX70 probably being the smallest capacity machine in the 100cc class, the hole shot goes to the larger engined shifters and a couple of quick auto’s, so there's plenty of work to do for Adam and the other Cobra riders. Adam picks the leaders off one by one and by lap 2 he’s moved up to 2nd place. With some brilliant aerial displays and good solid consistent laps, he doesn’t let that first position out of site and puts in the fastest lap of the race finishing just 9 seconds down on the winner.

Moto 2 goes pretty much the same way. Adam gets a better start this time, and puts in 6 impeccable laps, but still needs a little more horsepower to chase down that elusive 1st place.

Commiserations for the day go to Brad Swinbank, who stalled on his first moto and got entangled with a back marker in his second........ Hey that’s racing, chin up Brad!

Final standings -1st Jack Straughan, 2nd Adam James, 3rd Frazer McFadden, 4th Murray Graham, 5th AJ Third.

1st Jack, 2nd Adam, 3rd Frazer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cobra boys, left to right Brad Swinbank, Ayrton Knowles, Adam, Reegan & Harry Carmichael and last but not least, Neil McClelland from Cobra Moto who was on hand all weekend and dished out the Cobra Buck$ at the presentation.

Fastest lap of the day – Adam James - Not only in the 100cc classes, but he was also quicker than all the 250 standard class and half the 250 mod class........ Not bad for the little 65cc motor.

15.04.09 Press Release - Cobra In The News

Cobra’s UK Factory Team Welcomes Top European Youth ATV Racer Adam James

11-12.04.09. Nora MX Rnds 2&3 Culham, Oxfordshire

Easter weekend. We arrive Friday afternoon and set up camp, sign on, go to scrutineering all ready for the weekends racing.

Walking the track, Adam notes a few changes from last time he rode here in the British Championship. Not one of his most favourite tracks as there aren’t many jumps in it, however the track is well graded and recent rain had set it in perfect condition.

Race day Saturday: Adam heads out for his first moto, determined to put behind him the demons of last year, which he does in style taking a clear lead all the way to the finish. Moto 2 & 3 go the same way and Adam posts fastest laps in each.

Race day Sunday: Nora MX had done a fantastic job of re-grading the track, as it had cut up quite badly on the Saturday. Adam went out for practice, came back to report the track was in perfect condition, the Cobra was running sweet as a nut and he was feeling good and confident.

With another 3 out of 3 wins, fastest laps and a hole shot, what more can I say?

The new Cobra didn’t miss a beat all weekend!

Oh, and thanks to Paul Winrow for pit boarding. He could be seen at various points around the track encouraging the riders... Great!

08.04.09. Cobra Moto Press Release

Cobra Motorcycles Welcomes Adam James to the UK Factory Team!

05.04.09. NETT Rnd 2 Topcliffe, York

When’s the bubble going to burst? This is our third meeting of the season in the sunshine!

We roll out the shiny new 09 Cobra ECX70…… Having only just picked it up the previous weekend from KIK, there had only been time to fit Adam’s personalised ZIP seat, Renthal bars, Pulse hand guards and race numbers.

Rolling out the new Cobra

So, off to the track for the practice session, and to turn the wheels for the first time. Adam waits until last to leave the gate to allow him space to check things out without being hindered. Returning to the paddock we make a few adjustments to the controls, tyre pressures and pre-load on the rear shock, Adam also reports a flat-spot at high revs, so we change the fuel filter to make sure it’s not being starved.

Moto 1. Disaster as Adam stalls on the line. The whole field of 25 riders are around the first corner by the time Adam sets off. Obviously a veil of red mist had come down over his eyes, he was on a mission now, and by the end of lap 1 he was up to 10th and by lap 4 he had caught the shifters in the top 5. With a puncture on the last lap he was lucky to finish 5th, his only consolation being he posted the second quickest lap time.

Adam

Moto 2. A slightly better placing of 9th for the hole shot this time. Managing to catch Brad Swinbank at half distance, who looked to be enjoying himself, with some great riding, as he continues to improve. Taking another 5th Adam was still 8 seconds down on 4th place AJ Third, with his Wiley Mods Cobra, however Adam gave a hint again as to the new Cobra's true potential with another second quickest lap time.

Brad

Moto 3. On the far side of the track, out of spectators view there had been an incident, which ended Jack Straughan’s dominance for the day, allowing a great battle to commence between Murray Graham, AJ Third and hot on their tails, Adam. This went on for a couple of laps, until Adam made a mistake and spun-out on a corner, taking a track side post with him. This allowed Brad, and Cobra Mod Auto rider Reegan Carmichael back through. Adam re-took 4th place, but couldn’t get passed Brad in time before the chequered flag. Yet another second fastest lap time for Adam.

AJ Third

Final shifter standings for the day: - 1st Murray Graham, 2nd Frazer McFadden, 3rd AJ Third, 4th Brad Swinbank  & 5th Adam.

All in all an excellent day’s racing, with Adam showing that the new Cobra has got the potential to win, once he gets used to it and can start putting some consistent lap times in.

29.03.09. Another New Sponsor!

Brilliant news... ZIP have expressed their interest in sponsoring Adam, this season!

Stu "Wacka" Walker of the Berkshire-based Zipwear company, has watched Adam develop over the last couple of years and is impressed with, not just his results, but also with his presentation.

We are really looking forward to meeting up to discuss the deal with Stuart and his team.

Check out the ZIP website by hitting the logo, and don't forget you can win a super cool, personalised ZIP seat cover in this months QUAD magazine!

28.03.09. The Cobra has landed

At last Adam's 09 Cobra has been freed by HM Customs.

We took the trip up to KIK to collect quad and a stack of Cobra goodies at the weekend.

Adam's first testing will take place at Topcliffe, next weekend at round 2 of the NETT Championship.......... Can't wait!!

24.03.09. New Sponsor

Pulse Racing Products have offered Adam sponsorship after viewing this website. Adam has been using Pulse hand guards for the last two seasons and will now continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Adam joins someone called Paul Winrow on the list of Pulse Racing’s sponsored riders. Can’t say I’ve heard of him myself! Thanks Pulse.

22.03.09. Nora MX Round 1. Wroxton, Banbury

Thanks to HM Customs, Adam’s new Cobra is sitting on Liverpool docks, waiting to be released, so it’s another weekend on a spare from KIK.

Race day morning the sun is shining, it’s up early, shower, breakfast and off for a walk around the immaculately prepared track. Set in a natural bowl the track sweeps up and down the contours of the landscape in a series of fast straights and hairpin bends....... A fast track!!

Race 1. Adam is beaten into second for the hole shot, but by the third corner he takes over the lead. Catching up to back markers mid race slowed Adam’s pace a little and the hungry pack started to close on him, but not enough to prevent him from taking the chequered flag.

Race 2. The hundreds sat on the line and watched in horror as the dreaded bowser trawled up and down the steep start straight and then continue halfway around the track. A mud bath, just what these little motors need!

Well, if you don’t want to get covered in mud, get the hole shot, and that’s what he did.

Three laps in and the yellow flags were out for an incident on the track. With riders in previous races already disqualified for overtaking while the flags were out, Adam couldn’t afford to take any chances. As he came up to lap one of the back markers, all he could do was to follow, there was a few tense moments as Keiren Jones closed right up on Adam. Clear of the flags and there was no looking back, pulling out a clear lead and maintaining it to the finish line.

Race 3. Adam is a close second for the hole shot and quickly takes the lead. The track is rutting up quite badly now, but the super smooth suspension soaks up everything that’s thrown at it and Adam takes the flag with an impressive lead.

Fellow Cobra rider #46 Brad Swinbank had an excellent weekend in only his second outing on a shifter. He’s improving brilliantly every race, finishing 3rd overall in his last race. Keep it up Brad.... Watch out Adam!

15.03.09. NETT Round 1. Armthorpe, Doncaster

Sunday morning, welcome to sunny Doncaster. Yes sunny. There’s a first!

The Fat Cat track was well prepared, with a number of changes from previous years, and for the first time the 100’s were racing the full circuit, including the bomb hole!

Adam’s 09 Cobra was still on its passage across the Atlantic, and with his old one immaculately prepared ready to sell, Keith Knowles kindly arrived with a spare machine for him to use. We fitted Adam’s race numbers, transponder and we were ready to go.

Cobra shifters were a little thin on the ground, with just Adam, AJ Third and Brad Swinbank on his shiny new 09 model. Hopefully Murray Graham will be on his new Cobra, next meeting.

2 laps into Race 1 and Adams gear lever had worked loose, leaving him stuck in fourth gear, he struggled out of the corners, but made the most of posing for the photographers where he could. AJ Third also had a bit of misfortune, losing a hose connection, nearly seizing his engine. All were fixed ready for Race 2.

Adam takes time out to pose for the camera. Picture courtesy of Throup Photograpy

All in all it was a good start to the season with the riders settling in, riding at their own pace, blowing out a few cobwebs and getting used to their new machines.

1st Jack Straughan. 2nd Murray Graham. 3rd Adam James.

Highlight of the weekend, was seeing Robert Elliott up and about, albeit on crutches......... Fantastic!!

RIDER UPDATE Adam James

The phone rings in the Adam James household; it’s Keith Knowles from KIK. “Your parts are back from powder coating” is the message.

Yes it’s that time of year again, Christmas is out of the way and you’ve grown tired of looking at your Carpe Diem DVD’s. If you haven’t done so already, this is when preparations for the new racing season start.

It’s the weekend and we’re heading back from KIK, armed with the Cobra frame - strengthened and gusseted, A arms and awing arm, all beautifully finished in bright red, together with new nerf bars and a few other bits and bobs, all ready to start the rebuild.

Waiting in the garage are all the Cobra’s ancillaries, cleaned and polished, ready to bolt back together. Adam is on hand, eager to help, as he is itching to get back out for some practice.

The following weekend we wheel the finished quad out of the garage, it looks and feels brand new, not bad considering this little Cobra 70 shifter has already had two full seasons of hard racing, 2007 winning the JH IOPD British Championship and finishing a close 3rd in the NETT, and in 2008, after an inconsistent mid-season, finishing 3rd in both JH and Nora, 4th in the BYMX series and taking it down to the wire in the NETT to finish a close second. This is a true testament to the Cobra build quality, as I don’t believe there’s another mini quad out there that would take that sort of punishment year after year.

Congratulations to Alex Rossiter and Jack Straughan (fellow Cobra riders) for sweeping away the top trophies in 2008.

Bring on the 2009 season. Plans are for Adam to compete on his KIK Cobra in JHQR, NETT, Nora MX and the BYQX series.

February 19 2009.

JH Quad Racing has called it a day and pulled the plug on its planned 2009 championship and the club. JH owner Jed Soar thanked those that had committed to the club for 2009, but blamed a lack of support for the demise of the club and series and aims to return all paid membership fees by the end of the month.

We're all gutted about the news. "I was really looking forward to racing at Thoresway and Mildenhall again" said Adam.

One weekend, three days, three tracks

Richard, master of encouragement. Day 1

What better way to spend a long weekend, than to travel up to the North East for some serious quading.
7:00 am Friday; Adam James and I (Adam’s granddad), hit the road with trailer in tow, loaded with Adam’s 250 Yam, Cobra 70 and hopefully everything else we would need for 2 nights away…... I double check the cooler for beer!
In front of us is a 3 hour drive to Sedgefield, to meet up with Richard Cole, for a full day of 1 to 1 training. Richard is there to meet us and while I unload the quads and chat with Richard, Adam walks the track.
After what seems to be an age later, he reappears.  “What do you think?” Richard asks………. “Long”, “looks good”, “loads of jumps”, “really rough in places”, “let’s go” is the reply. Adam climbs onto his Cobra, kicks it into life and makes for the track for a couple of sighting laps, followed on foot by Richard and me. We make it to the central viewing point as Adam flies around to start his second lap, Richard, all the time watching, and listening to the engine note. He lets Adam continue for a few more laps before waving him in for his first lesson.
Richard is a master of encouragement and has great teaching skills. No matter how dad (Jason) and I have tried, Adam hasn’t listened, and here he was, not tamed, but feeding from Richard’s hand after just half an hour. Richard talks through where vital seconds can be cut off his lap times, and uses a wide vocabulary of engine noises, including gear changes, which he makes to emphasise his points, much to Adam’s amusement, but hey, it works well.

Sedgefield. Adam clears the 45' table top!

Adam puts in a few slick laps, putting into practice everything he’s been told, clearing the 45 foot table top each time. Richard is suitably impressed with Adam’s track work, so it was time to move on to practice his starts. After a number of solo attempts, some competition was called for, who? None other than “The Cole Shot” With Richard on Adam’s Yam and me on the flag…….. They’re off!! Who said he couldn’t be beaten?......  Or maybe he wasn’t quite trying!!

Discussing "Cole Shot" tactics

I have to say, this day’s training was better than any bolt on, go-faster accessory you could buy! Richard had brought out Adam’s true potential and it was a pleasure to see.
We say goodbye to Richard and load up for the drive across to Blue Barns, Round 4 of the NETT Championship. 3 minutes into the journey and Adam is flat-out asleep. What a fantastic day!

7:00 am Saturday. Wash the sleep from our eyes and it’s off to walk the track. Adam’s full of everything he had learnt the day before, and is looking for his lines through the corners, where he can get the power down, where he can overtake and where he is best positioned on the start line…….. Where’s the start line? Obviously it had been some time since the track was last raced on, and the gates were lost in the long grass. That aside the track was in good condition and the bowser was out in anticipation, as the sun started to burn off the clouds.
The 15 second board appears at the top of the track, engines scream, and a hundred and one tips and tricks are going through Adam’s head all at once, the board turns and in the same instance the gates drop. Not the best of starts for Adam, leaving him near the back of the pack for the first corner. Obviously annoyed at himself, he’s now on a charge back down the hill over the jump 1 and into the second corner, and he’s now back in the top 5. Lap 3 and all that lies ahead are main rival and shifter points leader, Jack Straughan and Alex Thompson in the mod class, he makes it past Jack and is pushing Alex for the lead, but doesn’t make before the chequered flag drops.
Race 2 goes pretty much the same way, this time with Jack taking the shifter win, leaving it all to play for in the last race. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond the organiser’s control, the last race was cancelled.

Blue Barns Day 2

Day 3 Sunday 7:00. We awake at our next venue, Wooley Ridge, Rnd 5. First off, replacing handlebars on the Cobra, to improve Adam’s riding position, as Richard had suggested. Job done it’s time to walk the track; Adam’s really excited as we pace out the table tops, deciding which ones he can clear…… “No, not that one Adam, you’re not Superman”.
Race 1, two laps in, and he’s pushing hard for the lead when the red flag comes out to stop the race, one by one the riders appear from the dust cloud, still in race mode until they finally catch sight of the flag.
Well not only the sun was shining down on us but also Lady Luck in a back-handed sort of way. Had the race continued, who knows what may have happened, as Adam’s frame had cracked in three places and was unsafe to ride any further.
What now? Straight up to Keith Knowles and the KIK camp….. Help!!!  Keith dropped everything and quickly rounded up assistance in the form of Duncan Elliott from Jade Haulage, Saturday’s sponsor. With spanners flying we stripped the bike to access the damage and Keith and Duncan whisked it away to make the repairs. You don’t get after sales service like that anywhere else, big thanks guys you saved the day.
Unfortunately despite all efforts, the restart came around too quick, and Adam missed it. Double disappointment came when it was announced that there would only be one more race.  All fired up and determined to show his appreciation to Keith for putting himself out, and to Richard, who was spectating, Adam put on a brilliant display, showing everyone what we believed he has always been capable of, coming in well ahead of the whole field.

Wooley Grange Day 3

Phew, what a weekend!!.............. What did you do?

Special thanks to Richard, Keith and thanks also to all those people who came up to me to pay compliment to Adam’s performances over the weekend, and make me, one very proud granddad.

April 2008 Issue

Hungry of Cheshire

For Adam, it all started in 2006, after a call to Quad Heaven and we were on the road for an exciting season of racing, armed with two Sharks, one standard, the other modified, supplied by local dealer Mark at Status Quads, Adam hit the MX tracks and he was loving every minute of it. Disappointment struck towards the end of the season with a series of mechanical failures, dropping Adam from 3rd to a still creditable 6th.

With the 2007 season looming, something more reliable was called for…….. The new Cobra!! Despite all the early hype, the performance wasn’t quite as blistering as everyone expected and I’m sure the price tag will have put many parents off, but, and this is a big but, when you consider you can buy a Cobra 50 auto for your 8 year old and then build on it as they grow, fitting the 70cc shifter engine, they could still be racing the same quad 4 years later with very little maintenance! We’ve done the sums and even with the initial outlay, last year was no more expensive than 2006 and this year we’re ready to race again and looking forward to a comparatively cheap season’s racing with the Cobra, sure we had some teething problems early on, however Keith Knowles at KIK was always on hand to offer advise and sort the problems, developing and tuning the engine, to provide a more reliable machine.

Despite missing the first round of the NETT, Adam finished 3rd in the 100cc modified geared class and finished 1st in the JHQ IOPD British Championship – Cobra class. The combined results from these events gave Adam the most points in the KIK Cobra Championship, winning a trip to the Cobra factory in Michigan later this year and hopefully a chance to race in a local event whilst there.

So, what’s in store for 2008? Well the new Yamaha YFM250 looked like it could make for some interesting racing this year and with Adam turning 12 he was now eligible to enter the JHQ 250 standard class. A chat with Martin Fletcher at ATV World and we were on the way home with the new quad, A-arms, shocks, axle etc. After a few nights work it was ready to hit the track…… Not quite as literally as I was expecting!! Having not listen to anyone’s advice, half way around his first practice lap at Armthorpe, Adam thought he would try a forward roll. After a short trip back to the paddock in the ambulance, it was time for a reality check… Bigger quad, bigger engine, more care!! Despite being bloodied and bruised, he was back out for the next practice, albeit at a slower pace. Thank goodness for helmets, body armour and neck braces!!

This coming weekend we're off to Harrogate with ATV World to test the new race prepared 250 Yam and receive some tips from John Mitchell and Paul Holmes. Sunday it’s back to Doncaster for Round 1 of the NETT Championship and the start of a busy season.

This year Adam will be competing in the NETT Championship on his KIK Cobra, JHQ Racing on both Cobra and Yamaha and also the ACU British Championship on the Cobra…… Well that’s the plan anyway.

Without sponsors, all Adam’s financial support is shared by dad, Jason who also competes himself in JHQ and me, granddad, who despite being very, very old, is left with all the cleaning and maintenance! So if you see us out there, come over and have a chat and bring any left-over food from your BBQ as we’re always hungry!
