This page is dedicated to #85 Mark Watson

Gone but not forgotten

Mark had made plans for the 2012 racing season, he had signed up a small team of riders with the passionate belief that the Team could win the Pro’s, U21’s and the Youth Open Championship classes, he said “I’m only interested in winning”.

There was to be a press release just after Christmas, with an update on how Mark had been progressing since receiving multiple injuries in a horrendous crash when a quad landed on him in practice at the Quadcross of European Nations at Jauer, Germany, in September, and also to outline his future plans.

Mark was busy, not only with his construction business, but preparing the race bikes, finalising sponsorship deals, ordering parts and race kit, planning video and photo shoots, training and test sessions.  The KTM race bikes were all to be identical, using the same aftermarket products and carrying the team graphics.

Mark had unbelievable determination and a true passion for his sport.

The 2012 WSRacing KTM ATV Racing Team was to be headed by #85 Mark Watson with new team mates #660 Connor Smith and #7 Adam James.

St Augustine’s was packed to capacity for Mark’s funeral.  His family and closest friends followed the coffin in to the music of Video Games by Lana Del Rey, chosen by his girlfriend.  I don’t believe there was a dry eye in the house.  Tributes from Mark’s girlfriend and his best friend were read out and when the service was over, we all filed out into the church grounds past one of Mark’s race bikes, stood by the door, immaculately presented, an emotional sight.

The short walk to Alston House took us down the cobbled hill from the church to the junction where Mark tragically lost his life, the frontage now adorned with flowers and messages, another emotional moment.

Mourners had travelled from far and wide, from both side-car and quad racing fraternities, to pay their respects, such was Mark’s popularity.

A sad day for all!

The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, December 27, when the car he was travelling in crashed into a house in Alston, Cumbria. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The 26-year-old had been making a remarkable recovery from multiple injuries received in a horrendous crash when a quad landed on him in practice at the Quadcross of European Nations at Jauer, Germany, in September.

Following that incident Mark had to be air-lifted to hospital and spent three-weeks recovering while he underwent laser treatment to heal damaged ligaments and muscles in his lower back.

On the road to recovery he had recently started preparing and training for the 2012 Quad-X season.

Riding for the KTM Factory Team, the Cumbrian finished fourth overall in the 2011 British QuadX Championship.

As a privateer in 2010, he finished second overall in the Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championship and was currently ranked in the top three overall in the UK.

In his second year riding for the Anderson Suzuki Team he pulled off his first first overall event victory in the British MMX Championship in 2009 at a round of the series staged at Dean Moor in Cumbria.

He began winning British and European trophies in 2004 in sidecar racing with his brother John and he retained the British Under 21 Champion from 2004 to 2007. In 2006 he won the World Sidecar Championship GP in Rudersburg, Germany.
